Project overview

Snorr is a minimalist white noise generating app, designed to let the user focus on selecting the exact frequency and volume of white noise that suits their need. While other apps on the market incorporate looping sound effects or pre-recorded fan noises, I find those sounds to be distracting and hard to sleep to. Most people prefer to sleep to the sound of a mechanical fan, rather than hearing a looping sound. For this reason, I wanted to create an app that generates a non-looping frequency with an adjustable tone. Snorr combines sound from the brown, pink, and white spectrum, and programmatically generates it through the phone’s CPU. No looping tracks, just pure sound to sleep to.

Starting the Sound

The key screens of the experience are the volume control screen, and the frequency control screen. To begin the sound, the user taps the play button in the top right of the screen. The background UI elements will shift from a slightly dimmed state to a more vibrant state to indicate the experience is active.

Adjusting the Volume

The volume will default at 20% when the user begins the sound. To control the volume, simply slide anywhere on the screen up and down.

Navigation

The core of this experience is controlling the volume and controlling the tone. To switch between them, swipe anywhere on the screen left or right. The blue UI represents volume control, the purple UI represents tone.

Changing the tone

Controlling the tone frequency is the same as adjusting the volume. Swipe up and down anywhere on the screen. The Hertz readout will change at the same time to indicate the tone you have selected.
